Lagos Receptionist Divorces Abusive RN Husband Over Constant Beating

A businesswoman and receptionist identified as Abiodun Azeezat has divorced her husband of 7 years, Abiodun Ogundipe over allegations of constant beating and lack of care for her and their 2 children.

Giving her evidence, 26-year-old Azeezat said;

“He beats me most times in the night. There was a day I got home around 7pm and met the door locked, only for him to open it 30minutes later and I discovered he was having sex with another woman. I’d confronted him about the lady named Rofiat but he denied any relationship with her and always beat whenever I raised the issue.

He later told me of his intention to marry her. He once beat me to the extent that I ended up in a hospital. He even assaulted my mum. Aside Rofiat, there are so many other women he’s having sex with.”

Azeezat who said she met her husband in 2011 when she was 18 years old and got married in 2012 because she got pregnant said;

“The whole problem started when he started dating Rofiat. Whenever I ask for upkeep allowance, he would tell me there is no money. I work to feed the family from the profit I realize from my business.”

“I can’t love someone who beat me up at the slightest opportunity. I left his house in 2018 as a result of constant beating and since then Rofiat is now living with him and is even pregnant for him. Our children now stay with a stranger; he even disallowed me from seeing our children at a stage. I don’t love him anymore and I want to have access to my children,” she said.

The respondent, Abiodun Ogundipe pleaded against the divorce, stating that he still loves his wife and that the entire allegations are not true.

He said;

“I set up a Pharmacy for her after training her in our personal house but she, after two years, said she could no longer stay there and relocated with our children back to Oke-Odo, an apartment where I used as an office space. But I warned her because being a nurse and a caregiver, many people are working with me and I attend to many patients in my office and their homes, but still allowed her to stay. When she came back, I established another business for her but most times, she came back home with the children very late in the night (11pm). I informed her mother but she said it’s the nature of her business and that she makes profit at that time.”

“Azeezat leaves home at the slightest misunderstanding for her mum’s house. Her mum and her Aunt even aborted our third pregnancy when it was 3 months without my knowledge. Her mother and her aunt are intruders in our marriage because they decide what happens there. They are both responsible for our separation and are not even ready to reconcile us,” he said.

“I’m not adulterous; Rofia came as a (nurse) trainee, and she is not my girlfriend. Concerning her education, she was attending National Open University Nigeria (NOUN) because it was agreed that I would sponsor her education, but she stopped at 300 levels when her mum could no longer contribute her own part of the money. I could have continued to sponsor her but she no longer listened to me but take orders from her aunt and her mother.”

Abiodun also denied beating his wife, claiming that it was her family members that came to beat him up.

“That fateful night, we had a misunderstanding, Azeezat as usual ran out of the house to her mother’s place only for her mum and her sister to come around 12 midnight to beat me up.”

Giving his judgement, Chief Olatunji Odunlami adjourned the case till 30th April. His words

 “We are inviting the two of you for mediation on April 18th to find a way of reconciling both parties. In the interim, Azeezat must have unfettered access to her children.”
