Longest Living American President Jimmy Carter Begins End Of Life Care At Home
Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter, is set to receive hospice care at his home instead of further medical intervention, according to the Carter Centre.
The 98-year-old has been in and out of the hospital for some time. In a statement on Saturday, the Centre said that Carter had decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and would receive hospice care.
The statement also noted that Carter had the full support of his family and medical team, and that the family requested privacy during this time while expressing gratitude for the concern shown by his many admirers. Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
Prior to this, he served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, and was a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. After leaving office, he continued his involvement in political and social causes and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian efforts.
Carter was born and raised in Plains, Georgia, and after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1946, he joined the United States Navy and served on several submarines. He left his naval career after his father’s death in 1953 and returned to Plains to manage his family’s peanut-growing business. Despite inheriting little, he successfully expanded and grew the peanut farm.
During this time, he became involved in the civil rights movement and was an activist within the Democratic Party. He served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and was elected as governor of Georgia in 1970, serving until 1975.
Carter went on to win the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination, defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford in the presidential election. Despite being a relatively unknown candidate, he ran as an outsider and narrowly won the election.
