June 22, 2016 – Man In Court For Stealing A Bag Of Rice At Agbalata Market In Badagry Lagos

A 23-year-old unemployed man, Tijani Dada, was on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a bag of rice valued at N13,000.

The accused, whose address is unknown, faced a one-count charge of stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 18, at the Agbalata market in Badagry, Lagos State.

He said the rice belonged to the complainant, Mrs. Morenikeji Ajala.
“The accused came to the complainant’s shop when she was not around and just took a bag of rice, but he was caught before he could get away,” he said.

Uko noted the offence was punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel for the accused, Mr. Folabi Smith, pleaded with the court to grant bail to his client on liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mr. Abiodun Etti, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 and a surety, who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned to July 27, for further hearing.

  1. The rice thief should better find a way and settle this case using ADR. This is the kind of case that our judges use to show how mercilessly good they are, and nobody should give them that chance.

  2. pls make una leave that man jori, cant u people see dat things r hard now,and the man is unemployed, where do u people want him to get money to buy the rice than to steal it na.

  3. Rice is now a big deal. Since the time the incident allegedly occurred til now, the price has gone up to N20, 000 so although one might say it is only one bag stolen, the owner is deprived of serious money.

  4. All forms of stealing should be condemn in the society
But our Economy is not smiling
    A bag of rice N13,000,bail N50,000??
If he has that amount will he steal?

  5. Blame it all on your so called president, that fulani herdsman called buhari in Aso Rock. Whom am sure you even voted for, one mistake you made now you are stealing rice. So shameful.

He was supposed to be solving the problem of the country rather, he‘s compounding it. How could he closed border and ban the importation of rice and other essential comodities when we are still yet to far from standing as a production country. Thats stupidity if you ask me. Its should have been a gradual process not authomatic.

    I take a srtoll…

  6. Now he will spend N50,000 for a bag of rice he will never go home with. What hard to make money, not by stealing

  7. Now he will spend N50,000 for a bag of rice he will
never go home with. Work hard to make money, not
    by stealing.
