Nigerian Woman Seeks Justice & Freedom From Marital Woes, Accusing Husband Of Betrayal
Nigerian Woman, Busayo Olaibi Seeks Justice and Freedom from Marital Woes, Accusing Husband of Neglect and Betrayal
In a heart-wrenching plea for justice, Busayo Olaibi appeared before the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, seeking a resolution to her marital troubles with her husband, Olaide Olaibi. Busayo accused her husband of irresponsibility, neglect, and abandonment, which she claimed had caused her immense frustration and pain. In her testimony, she expressed her desire for the court to dissolve their union, bringing an end to the turmoil she has endured.
Despite being served court summonses, Olaide Olaibi was conspicuously absent from the court proceedings, leaving Busayo to present her case alone. She recounted the events that led her to take this drastic step, revealing a series of harrowing experiences during their marriage.
Busayo revealed that her troubles began soon after she moved in with her husband in 2013. Her mother-in-law, from the onset, exerted immense pressure on her, insisting that the marital rites would not be carried out until she became pregnant. This requirement caused Busayo great anxiety, and her worries intensified when she failed to conceive in the early months of their marriage.
Eventually, Busayo received the news of her pregnancy in the sixth month, bringing some relief. However, she faced numerous complications during her pregnancy and was subjected to a traumatic experience during childbirth. She shared the shocking revelation that she had been shot in the spiritual realm, leading to severe bleeding and an urgent need for medical intervention. Due to the lack of power supply at the hospital and a non-functioning generator, the doctor had to operate on her using only a lamp. The conditions were far from ideal, and her baby was delivered in the midst of this chaos.
Busayo’s distress did not end there. After being discharged from the hospital, her mother-in-law insisted that she sit on a potty filled with hot water, despite her complaints of discomfort and pain. The stitches from her operation eventually opened, causing her health to deteriorate rapidly. It was only when her concerned relatives visited and witnessed the alarming state of her health that they took action. They arranged for her to be treated at a government-owned hospital, where she underwent three additional surgeries.
Throughout this traumatic period, Busayo’s husband and his family showed no support, either emotionally or financially. Her mother-in-law even expressed dissatisfaction with the money spent on her treatments, dismissing her concerns and claiming that the wound was healing. Feeling neglected and abandoned, Busayo was forced to sell her personal belongings, including a gold chain, to cover the costs of her medical care. She took on the burden of working tirelessly to support herself since her husband failed to fulfill his responsibilities within the home.
To compound her struggles, Busayo discovered that her in-laws, believing she had access to significant funds, began treating her as their personal ATM machine. Despite her own financial challenges, she even helped her husband secure a loan from a cooperative bank, only to be betrayed when he failed to honor the repayment agreement. Left with no other choice, Busayo had to repay the debt herself.
In another distressing revelation, Busayo disclosed that she had purchased a plot of land and had already begun constructing a building on it before she got married. However, her mother-in-law continuously questioned the source of her resources, creating an atmosphere of suspicion and discomfort. She encouraged her husband to purchase another plot of land, and in a display of trust, she lent him N350,000 towards the purchase. To her shock, he obtained the land documents without her knowledge and registered them solely in his name. Furthermore, he has yet to repay the loan of N350,000.
Not only has Busayo faced financial betrayal, but her husband’s sister also borrowed N50,000 from her and has refused to repay the debt. In another instance, she stood as a guarantor for her mother-in-law’s loan of N300,000, but was only refunded N60,000. This situation led to her arrest and disgrace by the finance bank from which she had borrowed the money.
Busayo also revealed her husband’s suspicious and intrusive behavior, highlighting his habit of going through her phone. On one occasion, he came across a conversation with one of her customers who had relocated abroad, and he began suggesting fraudulent schemes she could use to exploit him. Shocked and ashamed, Busayo realized that her husband had little trust in her and even insinuated that her beauty could be used to deceive customers.
These accusations took a dark turn when her husband falsely claimed that she was involved with other men. As a result, her husband’s family violently stormed their apartment, beating her severely and confiscating all her property. Left without support, Busayo resorted to seeking medical treatment for her injuries, enduring immense emotional and physical pain. She faced ridicule within her compound and neighborhood, becoming a subject of gossip and scorn.
Despite her difficult circumstances, Busayo managed to gather resources to complete a flat in the building she had been constructing. She moved into the flat, determined to build a better life for herself and her child. However, her husband continued to neglect his responsibilities towards their child, providing no financial support for their well-being, education, or medical care. He even denied paternity, compounding Busayo’s distress and leaving her to bear the burden alone.
Busayo pleaded with the court to dissolve their marriage and grant her custody of their child. She emphasized the urgent need for her husband to fulfill his responsibilities as a father and provide the necessary support for their child’s upbringing.
The court president, Mrs. S.M Akintayo, after carefully listening to Busayo’s heartbreaking testimony, adjourned the case until July 17. She also ordered that a fresh hearing notice be served to the absent defendant, Olaide Olaibi. The court will endeavor to bring justice and resolution to this troubling situation, ensuring that the welfare and rights of Busayo and her child are protected.
