July 31, 2016 – Picture: FCMB Bank Manager Olisa Nwakoby Kills Himself In front Of His Pastor In Lekki Lagos Over N350Million Debt

Mr. Olisa Nwakoby, a manager at a second generation bank, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Plc on Friday evening shot himself dead in the presence of his Priest at the Lekki area of Lagos Island, Lagos State.

The father of a 10-year- old daughter was said to have taken his own life because of an incriminating huge loan transaction he approved in his bank.

Sources close to the family told ST at the weekend that the late Olisa was the approving officer for the loan which the beneficiary is no longer servicing and the bank was on the neck of Olisa to get the money back.

His late father, Chief Patrick Oguejiofor Nwakoby was a former chairman of First Bank of Niger Plc, a successfully lawyer , politician and a highly respected community leader before his death.

Fear over his integrity and the name of his family, which could be dented if his bank commences action against him over the loan, was too much for the vibrant banker to bear prompting him to shoot himself, our source said.

Our source did not say that there was suspicion of any foul play in the death of the banker, she also could not confirm the actual amount involved in the transaction, but she simply said “it was huge.” The case is being handled by homicide detectives attached to Area J Command, Lekki/Ajah. According to a police source.

The banks, on the fateful day he killed himself, went to meet his pastor. He told the pastor to tell his wife to take good care of his children, that what he would do in next few minutes would shock everyone. He was said to have later blown his brains out.

The source continued, “It was later discovered that he took money from the bank, N350million, and the money started creating problems for him. He killed himself.”

When the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmus, was contacted, her two lines were switched off. Olisa hails from Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government of Anambra State and he attended Abia State University, where he bagged a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, in Microbiology between 1990 and 1995.

  1. Hmmmm! Quest of materialism is the root of Nigeria’s problem. Safe jony to hell or heaven. I’m not the one to judge you!!!

  2. I think there are more to the loan or is even more than that, for a man yo have kill himslef in nigeria coz of the loan he approved for someone, are the debtor ghost?? That he can not lay hand on?? Anyway rest in peace and may da lord forgive u

  3. This is very difficult, and very unfortunate as well. People sometimes create more problems when they’re trying to fix an existing on. If only for once he had cared less about what people would say! He was rather afraid that his integrity and the name of his family would be smeared. But, in my own thinking, he should have even dreaded more the harrowing suffering, the psychological trauma and the possible stigma that he was to subject his family to if he committed suicide, and most of all, his eternal damnation.

Worst case scenario is: He loses all he’d ever worked for, do a long term in jail, and his wife perhaps follows other men in order to survive, with all manner of gossip circulating. All these do not worth taking his life if he had paused one second to put things in their proper perspective. Now, has the integrity he so feared giving a dent been protected? Has the family’s name been shielded from gossip?

The only practical prayer we can make here is for God to provide for the ones he has left behind.

  4. There goes another decieved Nigerian! To die a deptor is in itself a sin and not to talk of taken your own life which in actual sense was not your own but God‘s.

    Judgement really belong to God.
    Rest In ….?

    I take a stroll…

  5. Any witness to ascertain what happened? If this is how loans are approved in Nigeria, then that has to change! The manager should be the executioner of orders from the bank; not otherwise. This is how banks quickly fold up in Nigeria because one person makes the decision instead of the committee in the institution. I know that the borrower will promise an inducement for the loan to get through quickly. Greediness is a subtle technique employ by the devil to blank out your natural destiny for twinkles form hell.

  6. its most likely he took the loan for himself..that is still not enough reason for him to kill himself

  7. You die well, as a microbiologist are not suppose to be saving lives in hospital what are you doing in financial institution now you have seen what your inexperience has caused you……ok you bribed and the work was given to you and your mistake have caused you to commit sucide, Abeg go die make another person enter.VACANCY a bank manager needed in FCMB

  8. The hard-headed debtor(s) had a hand in the death just as much as the man who pulled the trigger. You collect loan and refuse to pay back and allowed another to take the fall while you think you can sleep easy in your borrowed wealth. Well you will not.
    RIP to the dead!

  9. Mr Olisa, you made a very big mistake and sealed your destiny for a long eternity. For all who have read and would read this story, understand First that suicide is sin, and the wages of sin first and foremost, is death. However, also understand that because Jesus Christ has died, we no longer have to die for our sins, but if we confess and repent we would be saved. Mr Olisa, you are not the first to give a loan that can go bad or become embarrassing to your family name or pedigree. The function of banks is actually to lend and accept money. So you did what bankers do. What is the worse that would have happened? You would have been indebted to your bank, but that won’t kill you. Show me one rich man or billionaire without debt? Almost none, so what is new? Nothing. With our present state of the economy, loans would go bad naturally, repayment would be hard, but things would pick up and God would let fortune smile on you if you seek His face in prayers. Please let this be a lesson to all, LET US NOT COMMIT SIN to cover up our sins, we would end up multiplying sins. Suicide is don and not a solution. I know what it means to have personal integrity but if you make this mistake to sin to spoil your family name or integrity, just confess and seek mercy simple! God Bless us All.

  10. He read microbiology and rose to become the manager of a bank.A square peg in a round hole.He approved a 350m for a customer without collateral. Was not taught collateral in a microbiology class.

  11. Olisa wouldn’t ‘ve killed himself for an amount he did not steal or approved for himself. A strand of hair on his head is worth much more than 350m. What is 350m that a worthy son of Nkwelle Ezunaka and of the most noble family of Nwakoby should fidget for? Oh life! There’s more to this sucide than the ordinary man can explain. The world is full of mystries. The Lord will give you a place amidst the angels and unveil the mystries to men on earth. Rip.

  12. A guy kills himself because he couldn’t handle his situation anymore some people are saying all sort of trash.Do you think it is easy for a person to Kill himself.Depression is a terrible illness and most people are not in their right senses. So instead of saying rubbish about the dead ,Please keep shut.
