Oct 16, 2012 – Teachers & VP Battered For Flogging Oba Of Benin’s Grand Daughter

The Vice Principal and teachers of the Federal Government Girls Secondary School in Benin City, Edo state Nigeria have threatened to go on strike over a brutal attack on them by some suspected hoodlums in Benin City.

The thugs invaded the institution on Monday of last week and battered some teachers and the vice principal over the alleged flogging of a student of the school who happened to be the granddaughter of Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa.

We learnt the little girl sustained some injury on the hand after being flogged by her teacher.

The thugs who stormed the school the thereafter demanded to see the teacher that flogged the girl. When their demand was not met, they resorted to manhandling the teachers around, including one of the Vice Principals.

According to PM news, State Chairman of TUC, Joe Aligbe who confirmed that the thugs were armed and threatened to return if the staff was not produced, said the flogging incident which took place two weeks ago was not reported to the school authorities.

“Our members are now afraid. We are here to appeal to them for calm. The principal is not aware. I know the Benin Monarch will not approve of this action,” he said.

Vice Principal, Special Duties, Mr. Ihiridan Harga said the school management team are new and was not aware of the flogging of a Benin Princess, adding:

“The alleged offence was committed before we resume here. We were not aware of the flogging. They were many and led by two chiefs. We didn’t even know the staff they claim that beat up the granddaughter of the Oba of Benin.

They started beating up everybody. The principal invited the police and the police said they must get invitation by writing before they come. The police didn’t come.”

The Public Relations Officer to the Benin Palace, Robinson Osayamen said he was not aware of the incident. He however confirmed receiving calls from journalists on the incident.

What kind of lawless is this? Another mini jungle justice in the making.

This is total madness, so if the so called princess is been flogged what the hell is the problem with that huh when a child is in the school is the duty of the teacher to be there him/her as a parent please please parent be careful on what you make your children think….. at the end of the day the child will be very rude to people him/her sees on the road knowing too well that the parent will come for rescue.

who is she that can not abide by the rules of the school? even Jesus Christ was beaten to death, infact is that Benin monarch educated at all? Then he should open a school at home for his children if he doesn't want his children to be corrected in school. let no foolish leader take such judgement because he is having an authority. Such can not happen in my place (Gboko) the king's palace will be set ablaze rather.

Yes a child should be discipline but not to the extent of inflecting injuries on that child in the name of correction.

For as long as we continue to have 2 sets of law; One for the rich and the other for the poor, Nigeria will always be where we are right now. the untouchables that would loot the treasury and get away with it because they are sacred Cows and the poor old boy! that steals and would get burnt alive because his father is not the monarch or well connected. Let’s bequeath a good legacy to the next generation. DO NOT SPARE THE ROD! SAVE THE NEXT GENERATION.

People, calm pls, reading whole lot of contributions one cannot help but notice that a lot of animosity is thrown at the Oba, point of correction, the writeup never said the Oba ordered any rowdiness or retribution at the school authority, secondly, capital punishment does not give any teacher the right or effrontery to battery, causing bodily harm to a child, what could she have done to be flogged to the extent of been injured? Kudos! to the school authority and teachers to take a beating for the perpetrator of this crime, this is because if they had ratted out the perpetrator, maybe he would have been killed, this should serve as a deterrent to abusive teachers who batter our kids in the name of correction/capital punishment.
