Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Takes Action Against Mr Macaroni’s Controversial Advertisement for D’General Bitters

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has recently taken notice of an advertisement featuring Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, and Kemi Ikuseedun, also known as Mummy Wa. The advertisement, promoting D’General Bitters, has gained significant attention due to its explicit content.

In the video, Mummy Wa is seen making a sexual advance towards her husband, portrayed by Mr Macaroni. Initially hesitant, the husband gives in to his wife’s request after consuming the promoted drink.

ARCON, represented by its Director General, Olalekan Fadolapo, released a statement on Friday, expressing their concern over the advertisement. They highlighted that the material had not undergone the necessary vetting and approval process by the Advertising Standard Panel (ADP) before being shared on social media platforms.

According to Fadolapo, the skit featuring Mr Macaroni and Mummy Wa goes against the regulations set by ARCON and the Nigerian Code of Advertising. In response, ARCON has demanded the immediate removal of the content from all social media platforms. Furthermore, they have assured the public that appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that those involved in the advertisement are duly sanctioned.

“The attention of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has been drawn to the D’General Bitters as a sexual stimulant advertisement by Mr Adebowale Adedayo a.k.a. Mr Macaroni and Miss Kemi Ikuseedun a.k.a. Mummy wa, being currently exposed online/social media platforms. The advertisement was neither presented for vetting nor approved by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) and is in violation of the ARCON Act and the Nigerian Code of Advertising.”

In their role as gatekeepers of advertising, ARCON is committed to upholding ethical standards and ensuring that all advertisements adhere to the prevailing laws of the country and the Nigerian Code of Advertising. They emphasize the importance of responsible and lawful advertising practices to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of the advertising industry.

As the controversy surrounding the D’General Bitters advertisement unfolds, ARCON’s actions serve as a reminder of the need for strict adherence to regulatory guidelines and ethical standards in the world of advertising.
