Nigerian Actress Ruth Eze Shuns Marrying an Actor: A Glimpse Into On-Set Dynamics
Behind the Scenes: The Complexities of Relationships in the Nigerian Film Industry
Nigerian actress Ruth Eze has made a bold statement about her personal boundaries when it comes to relationships within the film industry. In an industry where personal and professional lives often intertwine, Eze has drawn a clear line, asserting that she would never consider marrying a fellow actor due to the unique challenges and behaviors observed on set.
Eze‘s stance stems from her observations of the dynamics on film sets, particularly noting how some actors, including married ones, interact with fans and admirers. She remarked, “I can never marry a colleague. I can marry a filmmaker, but not an actor. If you see the things they do on set while filming, even the married ones, you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with them. Other girls come to look for them, and some even bring food.”
The actress pointed out a common scenario, especially when filming in locations like Enugu, where actors’ families might be in different cities, such as Asaba. “Imagine filming in Enugu and your family is in Asaba; you would see girls bringing food to them on set. Imagine being in love with such an actor and witnessing that,” she explained, highlighting the emotional challenges of such situations.
Eze also touched on the topic of privacy in relationships, particularly within the Nollywood community in the eastern part of Nigeria. According to her, there’s a general sense of wariness and caution among actors, partly fueled by a lack of mutual support and trust within the industry. “A lot of people don’t like to see others, especially in Nollywood in the eastern part of the country. We don’t like one another. I cannot expose my relationship, or who I am in love with,” Eze shared, emphasizing her choice to keep her romantic life private.
Delving deeper into the culture of distrust prevalent in some parts of the Nigerian film industry, Eze revealed an interesting aspect of on-set life in Asaba, Delta State. “There is no actor in Nollywood, especially in Asaba, that one would buy food for on set and they would eat. Everybody is scared, because of how dangerous that side is. When one goes for any production, one is usually scared. So, in order to be careful, one has to buy one’s food,” she said, shedding light on the apprehensions actors face in their professional environment.
Her insights provide a rare glimpse into the complex and often unseen aspects of life as an actor in Nollywood. Her decision not to marry within her profession is more than a personal preference; it reflects the nuanced and sometimes challenging reality of maintaining relationships in the spotlight of the Nigerian film industry. Her experiences and observations underscore the importance of boundaries, trust, and privacy, not just in showbiz but in all walks of life.
