From Kanayo O Kanayo to Davido: Celebrating Educational Achievements of Nigeria’s Beloved Entertainers
In the vibrant world of Nollywood, several stars have made headlines not just for their on-screen performances but also for their remarkable educational achievements. Kanayo O Kanayo: From Acting to the Courtroom
Kanayo O Kanayo, a seasoned actor known for his roles in numerous successful films, made a significant decision to return to university to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. Enrolling at the University of Abuja, he embarked on this new academic journey with determination. Upon completing his studies, he attended the Nigerian Law School and achieved a significant milestone by being called to the Bar on September 15, 2020.

His Instagram post announcing his graduation was a testament to his perseverance: “Don’t you ever give up on anything you want to become. I had always wanted to study law since my first degree in the early 1990s.” Before this, he had earned his first degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, showcasing his diverse academic interests.
Helen Paul: From Radio to Academia
Helen Paul, widely known for her comic persona ‘Tatafo’ on Radio Continental 102.3FM’s ‘Wetin Dey,’ is another star who has excelled academically. Her unique style of humor, which involved speaking like a child while addressing social issues, quickly endeared her to a broad audience. In 2019, she added a significant feather to her cap by obtaining a doctorate in Theatre Arts from the University of Lagos.

This achievement was especially meaningful to her as she dedicated the degree to her mother. In 2022, she reached another milestone in her academic career by becoming the Head of the Arts, Music, and Entertainment Department at Heart International University in the USA.
Davido: From Music to Academia and Back
David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, an award-winning Afrobeats singer, has also made significant strides in education alongside his illustrious music career. He graduated from Babcock University in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music, securing a Second Class Upper.

Saheed Osupa: From Fuji Music to Academia
Akorede Okunola, better known as Saheed Osupa, is a respected name in the fuji music scene and an academic achiever. He graduated with a Second Class Honour (Upper Division) in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. He expressed his joy on Instagram: “The public should be aware that, I, King (Dr) Saheed Osupa Akorede, am now a graduate of the prestigious University Of Ibadan, Class of ‘21.”

His academic journey also includes a National Diploma in Business Administration from The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Osupa, who began his career in music in 1983, has released several hit albums and acted in numerous movies.
Odunlade Adekola: From Acting to Business Studies
Odunlade Adekola, initially an alumnus of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, returned to academia to study Business Administration at the University of Lagos, graduating in May 2018. He shared his experiences as a celebrity student: “As a popular person, there were times that fans gushed over me while I was in school, but I always tried my best to manage the attention.” Born on December 31, 1976, Adekola gained fame for roles in movies like ‘Asiri Gomina Wa’ and ‘King of Thieves’ and is the founder of Odunlade Adekola Film Production.

Each of these stars demonstrates that success in one’s career does not preclude the pursuit of educational aspirations.
