Ooni Of Ife & Owa Obokun In Supremacy Fight Over Leadership Of Osun State Council Of Traditional Rulers

A messy supremacy battle disrupted the council of Osun State Traditional Rulers meeting yesterday after a scuffle broke out between the Owa Obokun, Oba Aromolaran and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s messengers

Owa Obokun had a brush with the advance team of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi after they brought his special chair to the front seat of the venue of the meeting as the presiding chairman.

Oba Adekunle Aromolaran immediately ordered them to remove Ooni’s chair. He told them he would preside over the meeting because he is the council chairman.

The Owa was quoted to have said that Oba Ogunwusi’s chair should not come before his own in any way. The development generated heated arguments among the Obas, who appealed to Owa Obokun to be patient about the issue.

When Ooni’s aides ignored him, he reportedly ordered his aides to beat them up.

Here is a photo of one of the injured aides of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The meeting was cancelled after Ooni’s aides were stripped and beaten to stupor.

A source at the meeting said;

“Despite the Ooni’s ‘Emeses’ (messengers) insistence that they were sent by the monarch to put the chair at that place, Aromolaran resisted them by force and got one of them stripped,”.

Aregbesola promises to settle the supremacy battle after he was briefed yesterday.

Owa Obokun should respect the Ooni of Ife based on his title and not his age.

Who is Owa of Obokun when late Oni of Ife-Oba Sijuade is sitting or talking? There is no doubt that Oni of Ife has superiority over all other kings according to Yoruba history and culture. The two known rivals for thousands of years are the Allafia of Oyo and Oba of Benin because both of them are elders brothers to the first Oni of Ife who happened to be the last son of their father-Oduduwa. BUT the first Oni of Ife took over authority from their father-Oduduwa who is believed to be the father of Yorubas. This Owa of Obokun was not one of Oduduwa seven sons. But Alake of Egbala, Oni Benin of Beninland, Alaafin of Oyo were among the sons of Oduduwa. The battle of supremacy between Oni and Obokun is ridiculous and unbelievable. I hope they settle their differences amicably.

I think you are not a Yoruba or you don’t know Yoruba history. Go and ask elders in your town if, you are from Yoruba land ; what is the meaning of Obokun ? who is obokun in Yoruba history ? what role did he play and who was is father ?

Gat damn it………!!!! Why are we blacks always on the front page of Newspaper because of inheritance that’s vanity before ur Creator. Just as Omokehinde has said; even the blind knows who’s superior between the two Obas. Its not his age or how long he has been on the throne that matter but, costume & tradition demands that if the Oba fighting with Ooni of Ife respect the Yoruba Culture. Well, I pray the Gov of the state & every other sane thinking elders resolve it with them amicably for Peace to reigh. For my people say: where two elephant fight, its the grasses around that bear the weight. Wishing u all a pleasant weekend!!!

      Hello Ms. ERANKO,
My dear sister, you really make me laugh o with your naughty comparison. This is what you missed in your analysis, do you know that the Oni of Ife-Oba Adeyeye visited the Owa of Obokun after that short crisis as shown in the above picture? That young king is a gift to the entire Yoruba race because of his vision of unity, prosperity, and peace among our people. He is filed with humble spirit and gentleness. Oba Adeyeye, may you live longer than your predessors. Ki ade o pe lori oba, ki ileke si pe ni orun oba. I’m proud of you sir, keep it up.

I’m not sure Owa is claiming suprimacy over Oni. He is only ignorantly considering his age to that of the present Oni. The late Oni was the Chairman before his demise and he was made the acting chairman in his absence. I want to believe the fault is that of the governor because there must have been some issues before the meeting. I only want to thank the present Oni for his maturity and his pursuit of peace in the land. He still went to visit the Obokun after the issue. Ksbiyesi Ade ape Lori o. Wa he ju a won isaju lo.

What is a reasonable king doing with thugs? end time owa of obokun.
Ooni should just ignore him cos this supremacy stuff has being going on before his ascension proper.
Most of the older obas are all bitter people may God give him wisdom to handle them.

Owa is a disgrace to suprise that he can be moving around with thugs. This is not amatter of age but the stool. It is high time Ooni and Isoro cult made this man and let others know that indeed he is reprenting Oduduwa,.Tell me any Oba in Yorubaland that can dare Aderemi Adesoji, hun that Oba will surely loose his senses.go and ask.

It’s quite unheard of that royalty is now been used to display thuggery and is even an aberration that a highly respected king will be going about having thug as his enthorage. My only sincere advice for Owa of obokun is that he should respect the office and not the because age is not a function of size.

As much as I believe that by tradition, the Ooni is Elderly in relation to the Owa Obokun, this matter appears to have resulted from COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN WITHIN THE TRIANGLE made up of the Ooni; the Owa Obokun and the State Governor.

Although a CHANGE in Chairmanship was inevitable (since it is not being rotated in the State) the CHANGE should have been effected, playing by Rules of Engagement. The Owa Obokun should have been reminded of the impending change, prior to the occasion. Even at the first such occasion, the Owa Obokun should have been enabled to motion the Ooni to the front seat.

Having said this, one thing is clear: The Owa Obokun will soon realise that the new Ooni is one of the very human-beings that any Oba would find friendly.

This supremacy things has been there for years, oba sijuade himself struggled to lead the council during his life time. In fact former governor BISI akande had to dissolve the council owing to this same leadership tussle it was former governor oyinlola that reconstituted it and made ooni life chairman. why did oba ogunwusi send his emmese to put his chair in the front of owa? that to is arrogance. oba aromolaran was made the chair by the obas before he became oba if he thinks it is illegal then he should go to court.

  31. fisco

    February 6, 2016 at 10:55 PM

well, I think oba ogunwusi goofed by sending his advance team to put his chair in the front that’s arrogance. the issue of leadership tussle in osun council of obas has been there since creation of the state, they inherited it from old Oyo. in fact former governor akande had to dissolve the council for this same reason but reconstituted by former governor oyinlola. I don’t support this kind of display by the traditional rulers, osun state government must speak out on this issue if not it will be difficult for this council to hold any meeting.

So much ignorance on this thread.
Owa Obokun is a baale? Clearly, you don’t know Yoruba history enough to know that the title Ooni was taken over by the house keeper and NOT a son of oduduwa. Monetary politics has changed a lot of things and it’s sad to see that a lot of people have fallen for it. Suddenly, every Oba is “old and bitter”, forgetting that your young Ogunwusi will eventually grow old too. The respectable thing to do is give honor to all kings who had voted for the owa as council chairman, by attending the meeting and raising the chairmanship issue at the meeting for a new vote. Not, simply send your chair as if you own everybody there. Besides the said issue has beenen resolved while people that are ignorant of history sit around to pass judgment.
