Woman Caught Beating Elderly Mother In Viral Video Arrested In Anambra State
The Anambra Police Arrest Ukamaka Udugbo for Assaulting 75-Year-Old Mother
In a disturbing incident, the Anambra State Police have apprehended one Ukamaka Udugbo from Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, for allegedly physically assaulting her elderly mother under her care. The Divisional Police Officer of Abagana Police Station, SP Ifeanyi Umeh, confirmed the arrest after receiving information from the 50-50 Action Group of the WomenAid Collective, an NGO dedicated to women’s welfare.
According to Umeh, the police station was notified about the ongoing abuse inflicted by the suspect on her septuagenarian mother, prompting immediate action that led to the arrest. Following a thorough investigation and documentation, the case will be transferred to the police command in Awka for further legal proceedings.
Mrs Ify Unachukwu, the leader of the NGO delegation, expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt response and urged them to ensure that the incident receives the attention it deserves, serving as a deterrent to others. Unachukwu condemned the daughter’s actions, describing them as “very unfortunate,” and advised young individuals against emulating such behavior.
The NGO also paid a visit to Mrs. Nkiru Okpata, the President General of the Women Wing in the Abagana Community, to discuss the distressing incident. Mrs. Okpata revealed that a community member had brought a viral video to her attention, which showcased the appalling act occurring within their community. Following an internal investigation, the authenticity of the video was confirmed.
“I am deeply shocked because Udugbo holds leadership positions in both the church and the village. She attends general meetings where we advocate against violence towards women. As a consequence of her actions, we will remove her from all her positions in the church and the community, as she has violated our rules and regulations,” Mrs. Okpata expressed.
A video had gone viral on social media, capturing a woman in her 50s, Ukamaka Udugbo, physically assaulting her elderly mother, Mrs. There’s Nwaokaka of Obe-Orofia, while bathing her in Obeagu Umudun, Abagana. Mrs. Nwaokaka had been residing in her daughter’s home, where she was supposed to be receiving care.
The victim’s son, Mr. Emeka Nwaokaka, expressed shock at his sister’s behavior, explaining that their mother had been staying with her for an extended period. He mentioned that his sister had shown remorse since the incident gained public attention, describing the act as “confusing” and unexpected.
Mrs. Eunice Anagor, the chairperson of the kindred to which Udugbo belongs, assured the group that they would provide care and support for the victim, who was currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Mr. Ben Okongwu, the Community President General, reported that the incident had been reported to the Divisional Police Station, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
“We do not intend to take the law into our own hands, so we have reported the incident to the police after confirming the authenticity of the video clip,” Mr. Okongwu stated, highlighting the community’s adherence to legal processes.
The Anambra State Police have taken swift action to address this distressing case of elder abuse, ensuring that the perpetrator is held accountable for her actions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting the rights and dignity of our elderly population.
