nigeria gay rights bill law

July 20, 2013 – “Nigeria Under Pressure To Sign Gay Rights Bill Into Law” – Foreign Affairs Minister, Olugbenga Ashiru

The Federal Government has said it is under pressure from the international community to sign the Gay Rights Bill into law in Nigeria.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, stated this in Abuja on Friday at an interactive session with the diplomatic corps, even as he accused the international community of hypocrisy.

He insisted that Nigeria would not sign the Gay Rights bill or abolish the death penalty without reviewing the constitution.

The minister said that Nigeria does not impose its culture on other countries and as such it was wrong for anyone to attempt to impose a foreign culture on the nation. He said, “This thing must be understood because we have been under pressure about this issue of Gay Rights. It is not part of our own culture, you need to understand that. It needs to evolve. Let us get to that stage of understanding that two men can marry, then we will get to the bridge and cross it. But please let foreign diplomats educate their various governments that you cannot come overnight and impose values that are not part of our tradition on us. Don’t impose it on us that we must allow it in our constitution. If we are talking about democracy, democracy is about free choice, free association you don’t force values on others.

“For those who have Gay Rights, even when I look at the population of those countries, those opposing are high in number. In some countries, the churches are against it, why put pressure on Nigeria and other African countries that we must put it (in our laws). Respect for human rights of a minute minority cannot be at the expense of the larger societal values, well-being and orientation of the people. Even laws are rooted in culture which must be upheld for the good of the society. I therefore appeal to the international community to show a greater understanding of the culture and traditions of our people.

“We don’t tell other countries how to live their lives. We don’t impose values on any country. Other countries too should not come and impose their own values on us. We don’t oppose any country that has put in its constitution the Gay Rights to allow two men or two women to marry themselves. But for Nigeria and a number of other African countries; it is not part of our culture yet.’’

He said it was hypocrisy for the United States to be championing Gay Rights and while criminalising polygamy which is part of Africa’s culture and tradition.

“At times you see hypocrisy in some of these things. I must be frank. If we talk about human rights, how do we apply them? It seems they are being applied to favour some certain groups and not of wider application. There is hypocrisy in this issue of Gay Rights and polygamy,” he added.

The level of hyporicsy by Western countries is truly suffocating. Double standards are the order of the day. They want us (Africans) to embrace their dirty culture, but are never ready to do the same to ours. They are forcing down our throats uncouth/unafrican & immoral behaviours to our ignorant brethren in the name of civilisation

It shocking how ignorant people still are in Nigeria after reading all this comments. Gay right is not a western culture, it an human culture. nobody should be subject to discrimination or go to jail bcos of their sexual orientation or believes so as nobody should be taught as or look down as a minority or second class citizen bcos of their tribe or family origin. It about equality and mutual respect for you fellow citizen. In case you are wondering, I’m straight married man who believes there far more economy problems Nigerian Govt refused to address.

My brother I feel sorry for u for u don’t know what u’are talking about, sidom and gomorrah was destroyed for this and u think they shouldn’t be sent to prison . So u pefer so our Nation to be destoryed and u don’t think about innocent people ,children our unborn generation. And what is that desire u’re talking about isn’t it better to destroy that desire than for it to destroy you and the nation. I have so many to say put i have to pause here and i hope i change ur mind to think right.

Stop saying “SODOM and GOMORAH” happen because of gay. It happen because of the sins of the people, such as funicators, adultres, killer, liers, bad government even people like you that wish your fellow human death because of his or her sexual orientation. Listen to your selves, you speak of end time and fear for sodom and gomorah yet you wish people death. If they have their right does that mean they have any thing to do with you..?

Remember the scripture when God sent his servant to find the rightious ones before the destruction of sodom and gomorah and none could be found. It is end time dont let your wish for these people to take you hell rather reach them in person and talk to them about heaven or else…..
Jesus preached and teaches love for one another. Beleive it or not if Jesus is to speak on this as we do he will not wish or support any law of descrimination or death for his people. Rather he wil speak forth the word of God.
Let me ask and tell you; will you kill or wish people to die in other for the end time not to Come?
If your answer is yes then you are an Enemy to God for been against his word. But know that by so doing you are fulfilling the end of time in hast.

we don’t gay-ism in Nigeria, if u are a gay and u can’t stop it please leave Nigeria and to other country where u practice it freely

  32. Honestly...

    July 23, 2013 at 10:37 PM

    Udeme John..@..You said we dont gayism in nigeria as if you or people were ask to practice it or you think it is something that hundreds of persons are involve in nigeria. Imagine a country where millions of people are involve gay stuff you then people that are suppose to protect and respect the right of every citizen will just wake up from their slumber and inpose a descrimination law againt some millions of people just because of their sexual orientation? Freedom to live your life as it pleases you as long it dont affect your neighbor’s is in nigeria’s constitution tell me now;

**Why are they against these people?

**Is it that our government make only law that pleases their tradition and custom?

**If yes, “then where is human’s right in nigeria?

** If no, “why are the descriminating these people?

Crying out loud majority of these people are born this way.
    **Why are you against them?

**How does another man’s life affects you?

**Are you to use there man hood for them?
GOD ALMIGHTY is never in any day involve in politics of this world.

**Those who make the laws of this country are they worthy to make heaven if this world should end right now?

** What about you. Some body said nigeria is not a place for gayism; is gayism the only sin nigerians had known?

    **What about the rest.

Our politicians swear an oath before they resume their offices to deffend their people not to descriminate them, to unit them not to seperate them…………….

Beleive it or not if these days were before Jesus came to earth; this world including nigeria would have been destroyed long ago, because the sins of this present day is worst than that of Sodom and Gomorah. We are alive today because of the love Jesus had shown to us, Like wise love you fellow same because Jesus taught us to love our neighbour in all time. Jesus want his people to live but not die. Salvation is one mans race wish them well pray for the that they should change because change is a constant thing, it might happen to them
