Ogbor Hill Aba River, Abia State Road Accident Kills 8

ogbor hill aba road accident

Nov 18, 2012 – Ogbor Hill Aba River, Abia State Road Accident Kills 8

8 people died on Friday, while five others were seriously injured in Aba, commercial hub of Abia State, following a multiple road accident. The accident, which occurred on the bridgehead of Aba River in Ogbor Hill area, involved a tipper lorry, a trailer, one bus and three commercial tricycles (Keke NAPEP)

The accident occurred when the tipper lorry with registration number ABIA: 555 UNC, which was loaded with gravel and was descending the hill towards the city centre, had brake failure and the driver lost control. The vehicle rammed into another vehicle and the tricycles that were held up in a traffic jam.

The other vehicles involved in the accident included a trailer with registration number LAGOS: XR 912 LSR, belonging to Flour Mills of Nigeria Limited and an Abia Line network bus. The incident, which occurred around 5 p.m., an eyewitness said, claimed the lives of eight persons who died on the spot, while five others with injuries were rushed to hospital. According to the eyewitness, among the dead were two persons in the bus coming from Umuahia, which was the first to be hit by the tipper lorry, while the remaining six persons were inside the three Keke NAPEP that were smashed beyond repairs.

Some people, who spoke with our reporter, blamed the incessant accidents that happen within the area on bad state of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, which increased the volume of traffic on the Ikot-Ekpene and Umuoba/ New Umuahia roads, which now serves as the only route from Aba. It would be recalled that for sometime now, many lives have been lost on that spot as a result of accidents occasioned by bad roads, and the nearby abattoir where cows compete with vehicles on the Aba River slope.

A traffic warden, who was at the scene of the incident and who did not want his name mentioned, told Sunday Sun he was unable to know the number of persons that died on the spot because, according to him, he could not withstand the flow of blood from victims of the accident.(Credit:Sunnews)
