September 15, 2017 – South East Governors Forum Condemns Activities Of IPOB As Group Leaders Shun Peace Meeting

The South East Governors’ Forum today announced the proscription of activities of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Arising from its emergency meeting on Friday in Enugu, Chairman of the forum, Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state requested the group and other of such groups to articulate their grievances and send to the forum.

Umahi appealed to all governors in the zone to ensure compliance with the directive in their various states and for the Federal Government to withdraw the troops in the zone.

Umahi said:

“All activities of IPOB are, hereby, proscribed. IPOB and all other aggrieved groups are advised to articulate their position on all national issues.

“Such should be submitted to the committee of governors, Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and National Assembly members from the South East zone through the chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum,” he said.

The Ebonyi governor said that the forum believed in the unity and indivisibility of the country and reinforced their desire for the restructuring of the country.

“We reinforce our desire for the restructuring of Nigeria where all national issues will be discussed and amicably settled to achieve justice and fairness to every Nigerian.

“Accordingly, we appeal to President Muhammad Buhari to, please, withdraw the military in the South East zone, while police perform their traditional role of maintaining law and order,” he said.

Umahi said that the forum was in touch with their northern counterparts “who have assured us of the safety of our people living in the north and we have also planned for exchange of visits to reinforce confidence.

“We wish to assure Nigerians that full investigation is ongoing on all allegations of killings, maiming and other unlawful conduct in the zone within this period,” he said.

He said that appropriate actions would be taken against those found culpable.

Umahi said that governors in the zone had taken adequate measures to protect the lives and property of indigenes and non-indigenes and urged northern governors to do same in their respective states.

“We advise all residents of the zone to go about their normal businesses as governments of each state is committed to protecting everybody,“ he said.

The governor said that all those invited for the meeting were present except the leadership of IPOB that sent in their apologies.

  1. It takes wisdom of God to build a home, town, state, region, and even a fragile nation like Nigeria. But these governors have shown courage, wisdom, and strength to come together in unity to resolve chaos in Abia state. IPOB should be tag a terrorist group in the way and manner Kanu Nnamdi has foolishly tarnish the image of the group. Nigeria needs restructuring as stated by those governors, but not at the expense of innocent people’s lives that have no link with IPOB nonsense. The way and manner the federal government carried out the the military raid in Umuahia, Abia state is wrong and that to me is excessive use of force. Arrest Kanu Nnamdi for setting up militants and violation of his bill term only with proper court order to do so without killing innocent people in that town. Why keeping Kanu on house arrest when he was the main cause of lost of lives in Abia state? Arrest him now or leave him alone, and immediately withdraw all military men from the entire state. I’m siding with the governors that there should be immediate withdraw of all military officers from Abia state. Kanu stupidly just wasted innocent lives because of his arrogance, wickedness, selfish mind, and lack of wisdom. According to Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, only a fool man argues with a man with a gun. PMB will surely be a one time President, why not use wisdom to resolve the issues the way Igbo true leaders and elites are doing behind the scene or close door. IPOB should be label a terrorist organization by international community of nations in order to avert other dangers and unnecessary lost of precious human lives in the Southeast region. PMB should begin true negotiation with the Igbo leaders for peace and unity to reign in that region and Nigeria at large.

  2. I am ashamed of Igbos mostly those that claim to be on power, they only end up using their power against their own people all for the sake of fear of loosing their position. Tell me that Hausa youths are the one protesting and army start slaughtering them that are armless that Hausa governors or traditional ruler or elders will come and tell you they barn their youths or criticize them all because they are fighting for freedom. May i ask, ‘Fighting or agitating for freedom is it against the law’ if yes, why did Azikiwe and Awolowo etc fight for Nigerian freedom and why were they not slaughtered by British government? Just need an answer

  3. Omokehinde…IPOB cannot and will never be labelled a terrorist organisation by the international community. That can only happen in a repressive country named Nigeria. The civilized Nations around the world know fully well that agitation that is purely armless and based on peace and squarely focus on the demand for equity, fairness, equal right and freedom is still well within the confines of the UN charter and therefore cannot be condemned or denounced by any member nation. So if you are thinking the world governments will declare IPOB a terrorist organisation, I guess that may be a dream that can never come true in a million years to come. At this time, men of influence and former rulers should begin call Buhari to order and should be advice to choose the part of diplomacy rather resorting to the use of leather force against unarmed youths from the southeast. Nigeria as it stands today cannot afford the creation of another armed group from the southeastern part of the country due to the reckless approach by the president in handling the delicate issue of the IPOB. Buhari should give his words to the army to withdraw there troops from the southeast that have been killing innocent civilians under the cover of clearing bandits, kidnappers in the region and should focus there fight toward the BOKO HARAM territory in the northeast.

  4. This self centered idiots don’t ever think of their peoples interests. You keep referencing IPOB activities without thinking of how to present the cases of neglect being meted on your people , that brought about the IPOB movements.

  5. @omokehinde, remember that a cow that is laughing at his brother cos they are taking him to the abattoir for sallah celebration should know that sallah is a continuous celebration, it will get to his or her own turn. a word is enough for the wise.
