Alaafin Of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi: Police Invitation To Monarch Is A Total Disrespect
Nov 9, 2012 – Alaafin Of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi: Police Invitation To Monarch Is A Total Disrespect
Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, ALAAFIN of Oyo, has described as desecration of the sacred traditional institution for the police to invite a monarch to their station to make a statement.
Instead, Oba Adeyemi noted the police should go to the palace of the monarch to make enquiries.
He was reacting to the invitation of Sabiganna of Iganna, Oba Soliu Oyemonla Azeez, by the police on the invasion of the farmlands of his subjects by some Fulani herdsmen.
Alaafin, who was speaking at the 3rd year coronation anniversary of Sabiganna of Iganna, said the action was ridiculous and insulting on the traditional institution of obaship.
The foremost traditional ruler further said, “a situation where traditional rulers were being called upon to come to police station to make statements is ridiculous.”
According to him, a police man should go to the Oba’s palace to make enquiries from him and not the other way round. “This kind of nonsense must stop”, he warned.
Also, he advised the Oyo State Government to encourage the establishment for the people of Iganna in the Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oke Ogun in Oyo State.
He stated that it was risky for the people living in the area to travel about 25 kilometres to another town before they could deposit or withdraw money.
Alaafin said the situation was a major challenge to the Deputy Governor, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo, a retired bank official.
Chief Adeyemo stressed further that the call for the establishment of the bank was necessary to save the residents from armed robbery attacks.
He added that absence of a single bank in the whole of Iganna was an indication that the town was lagging behind in the area of social and infrastructural development.
Oba Adeyemi also tasked the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) administration to relocate the local government headquarters from Iwere-Ile to Iganna where it was initially located. (Source:Vanguard)
This monarch is a very fearless man.

I THINK KABIYESI SHOULD REALISE THAT LAW IS NO RESPECTER OF ANYONE. NO MORNACH SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW.
WHEN A KABIYESI IS INVITED, IT SHOULD BE WITH FULL RESPECT THAT IS ACCORDED HIM, AND IT SHOULD NOT BE ON THE COUNTER. HE SHOULD GO INSIDE THE DPO’S OFFICE.
BUT TO SAY MONARCH SHOULD NOT BE INVITED IS PLACING THE MONARCH ABOVE THE LAW. GOVERNORS ARE BEING INVITED BY THE EFCC NOW. PRESIDENT IS BEEING INVITED BY THE HOUSE. THEREFORE, NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW OF THE LAND.

I totally agree with you. Nobody is above the law and no matter who you are, you should cooperate with the police to assist it in its investigation.

@ROY… A policeman going to the oba to the OBA,s palace….does not means he is placed above the law..
It just a mere respect for the TRADITIONAL. Institution… Remember an invitation is just for inquires not an Arrest…

@Roy bello,i guess kabiesi had spoken well. The invasion of western way had reduced the respect and homage due for the monarchs and if care is not taken they we wipe tradition of and mind u the british do not joke with monarch, can they try such mesy act with the queen. If we are crying let’s try to see,and as regarding the issue of Efcc u made mention above, they ave no right to probe any incubent governor or anyone in political offices..They ave the immune until they vacate the office, that’s power of incubency.

As respected a traditional ruler as the Oba is, he can not place himself above the law. Its even more disrespectful for him to make those comments about law enforcement. What sort of example is he setting for his “subjects”? The Alaafin is not the Queen of England and should harbor no illusions as to how important he really is other than being a guardian of tradition. That said it is customary for police in such high profile situations to go directly to the person from whom then wish to obtain a statement.
