Jan 28, 2013 – Boko Haram Beheads 8 People In Maiduguri, Borno State Hours After Ceasefire Promise

Boko Haram attackers have killed eight people in a village in north eastern Nigerian state of Borno , with at least some of the victims’ throats slit, officials and residents said Monday.

The military spokesman in the area, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, confirmed that an attack had occurred Sunday in the village of Gajiganna, but declined to comment on the manner in which people were killed, saying only that “lives were lost.”

Gajiganna is roughly 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the state capital of Maiduguri, the base of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, but it was not clear who was responsible for the latest violence.

“They were silent attacks and nobody knew what was happening until the morning when news began to filter from different neighbourhoods,” said resident Brah Chindo.

There were conflicting reports from the area, with some saying certain victims were shot and others had their throats slit, while others spoke of all eight with their throats slit.

“It is still not clear who carried out the attack because the attackers moved silently into these homes,” said a local official, who asked that his name be withheld.

A local government employee in the area said he was told that “some of the victims were shot dead in their houses while others were dragged out of their houses by the gunmen, after which they slit their throats.”

He added that “eight people were killed altogether.”

In a text message, military spokesman Musa said the death toll “is yet to be ascertained”.

Boko Haram, which has said it is fighting to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has claimed scores of attacks in Borno state, but criminal groups are also thought to have carried out violence under the guise of the Islamists.

A number of recent attacks in Nigeria’s northeast have seen attackers slit the throats of the victims.

In October, at least 40 students were killed in a massacre at a university housing area in neighbouring Adamawa state, an attack where many of the victims reportedly had their throats slit.

Boko Haram did not claim the student massacre, but many blamed the Islamist group, whose insurgency has left some 3,000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

In another development, a self-proclaimed commander of the Boko Haram sect in Maiduguri, capital of Nigeria’s north-eastern state of Borno has announced a peace offer , even as the state was horrified by another brutal killing by militants of the sect.

The commander who identified himself as Sheikh Muhammed Abdulazeez spoke to journalists Monday in Maiduguri, where the Islamist sect known as Boko Haram got its start.

Abdulazeez described himself as a second-in-command to sect leader Abubakar Shekau and said there would be a ceasefire as the Borno government had promised to release some sect members.

Abdulazeez reportedly met with Governor Kashim Shettima today.

While a government official later welcomed the announcement, it came as soldiers and police still hold Boko Haram members and violence continued unabated in the region.

A local resident of Gajiganna, a nearby village, said he saw eight bodies — some decapitated — after an attack, that bore the violent trademark of Boko Haram.

Boko Haram had offered unilateral ceasefire in the past, which it never kept, choosing instead to launch brutal attacks on the Nigerian state.

  5. These people are not fighting for Islam, they are just there being use by the Arabs nothing more or less.
True Muslims are the most tolerant you can ever meet in this world but when some free thinkers join them, they become to destroyed everything in the name of Islam…. may God forgive them to see the light of truth.

  6. Pls let us just take muslims as human beings who are created by God. The sickness associated with them especially the ones in Nigeria is illitracy and only God can heal them. The problem is, right from their childhood they are being thought by their islamic teachers that christians are enemies to muslims.so, to them whatever ‘Mallam’ says is final not whatever qur’an says ooo! becos in qur’an only one language is used which is the Arabic language and most of them do not understand it, so they depend on ‘Mallam’ translations. And you know when a blind man leads another blind man all will end up falling into a pit. That is just it, nothing more or less.
