Oct 28, 2011 – 4 persons were feared dead in a mine collapse that happened in the wee hours of yesterday in Dareta Village, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The miners were submerged in a hundred foott pit while extracting gold.
Zamfara Commissioner for Environment and Solid Mineral Development, Muktar Lugga confirmed the collapse when contacted on his cell phone, and said that he was at the scene of the incident.
Lugga said all efforts to rescue the victims proved abortive.
“We did all what was possible to support the victims in a rescue operation, including provision of excavator, but it was unfortunate the excavator could not get to the scene in time to rescue them,” he said.
Lugga restated the state government’s commitment to the protection of small-scale miners and their businesses in a bid to curb the reoccurrence of such unfortunate incidents.
