Mercy Johnson, who is now known as Mercy Johnson Okojie is a Nollywood superstar that had her humble beginning on the streets of Lagos and although she has been off our screens for a while, her captivating performance through her roles in movies still remain very fresh in our hearts. She was born on the 8th of August 1984 into a family of 9 in Lagos State but has her origin in Okene, Kogi State.
She was the sixth of seven children, her father Daniel Johnson was a naval officer and so due to the nature of his job his whole family was subsequently on the move. (NaijaGists.com)

Her mother, Elizabeth Johnson was trader. She passed away on the 24th of May 2018.
Mercy Johnson’s early education span across two different states in Nigeria. She started her basic education in a primary school in Calabar but was unable to complete it there because of the nature of her father’s job. She later completed her primary education in the prestigious Nigeria Navy primary school in Lagos before her family relocated back to Rivers State, afterwards she went to have her secondary education in the Rivers State Secondary School located in Port Harcourt.
From the experience stated above one can see her early life consisted of a to and fro movement between two different ethnic regions, this is believed to be the reason why she was so flexible and was able to blend in any faction of Nollywood.
Mercy Johnson didn’t get her university education before she decided to follow her dream of becoming an actress. It didn’t take long for her to get her big break. She was selected as one of the main characters in a movie “The maid” by popular director Kenneth Nnebue and the public was astonished with the way she played her role in the movie. The movie immediately put her in the spotlight and ever since then in 2004 it has been nothing but a climb up the ladder in her professional career.
Mercy Johnson is referred to as one of the lucky ones to have made it big in the movie industry without seeing the four walls of a university and apart from that, her rise to fame after the movie “The Maid” was so sudden and quick that it wowed many of her colleagues and the public at large.
Yes, there might have been a hint of luck involved but without doubt Mercy Johnson is one of the most talented actresses in the movie industry and the way in which she plays her roles with so much eloquence is enough reason for her to be classified as one of the biggest stars in Nigeria.
After her role in the movie “The maid” which put her into the spotlight, she became the face everyone sought to have on their movies. She started getting more roles and has since then featured in over 100 films with many of them earning her some accolades. Some of the very famous movies she has starred in are Brave Mind, Dumebi the Dirty Girl, Baby Oku in America, Weeping Soul and many others.
She has featured in many blockbuster films but her movie “Baby Oku in America” in which she played the major role of a local girl from Nigeria that travels to America is said to be her greatest movie of all time.
Mercy Johnson is a recipient of some awards because of her incredible acting skills and roles in movies, the awards include Best Actress in supporting role at the AMVA in 2009, Best Supporting Actress at the Nollywood Best Award in 2009, Best Actress in Lead Role for the movie “Weeping Soul” at the Nigeria Movie Awards in 2012, Best Actress in comedy for “Dumebi” at the AMVCA in 2013 and Popular Choice Female in 2015.
She also has quite a significant international fan base and has had some nominations for awards from other countries such as Ghana but she has not won any of them over the years.
The actress got married to her husband Prince Odianosen Okojie in a private ceremony in Lagos in 2011, they have 3 children together and may be on their way to having a fourth.
The couple met while on a flight from France and that was where their relationship started.
Life has not always been a bed of roses for the family as Mercy Johnson was accused of snatching the man she claims to be her husband.
The fact that Prince Odianosen Okojie was married to a woman named Lovely Odianosen and has two children with her is indeed true but he made it clear that it was his choice to marry Mercy Johnson and she didn’t force herself on him.
When asked in an interview about how she managed to keep her relationship intact and prevent the break up attributed with many celebrity marriages, she had this to say “I just try to look good whenever I’m near my husband, we play games and I put cards in his pockets containing sweet messages. Anything to make the relationship not boring”.
Mercy Johnson seems to be doing quite a good job as they have been married for seven years and their relationship seems to be waxing stronger.
Mercy Johnson Okojie has been off the television screen for a while and it is believed that she is taking the time off to build her family.
Having three kids in three years is definitely not an easy task. Apart from being an actress and a wife, Mercy Johnson is also a civil servant.
She is a Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to Kogi State governor His Excellency Governor Yahaya Bello on entertainment, arts and culture. With this her new post her fans and colleagues hope she will be able to bring more attention to the Nollywood Movie industry and help develop it to become one of the best in the world.
Her husband Prince Odianosen Okojie is also a political aspirant and he hopes that one day he will hold a reputable public office in the country.
Mercy has contributed her quota to the entertainment industry as an actress and is trying to do more with her post now that she’s a civil servant. She has made our screen time memorable on different occasions and for that she deserves all the laurels.
